HERAT CITY (Pajhwok): About 600 Afghan Local Police (ALP) members have been killed and more than 900 wounded nationwide during the first six months of the ongoing solar year, an official said on Wednesday.

This was stated by Deputy ALP Commander at the Ministry of Interior, Brig. Gen Abdul Hameed Hameedi, while talking to reporters on the sidelines of a day-long seminar that reviewed ALP’s performance in western Herat province.

Hameedi said the figures showed casualties among ALP forces had increased by 70 percent as compared to the corresponding period last year.

He deplored ALP forces had been deployed to areas about which they lacked geographic and demographic information.

In order to control ALP causalities, he suggested, it was important to station the forces in areas they were familiar with.

Speaking on the occasion, Governor Fazlullah Wahidi said police had become more professional as compared to 10 years ago.

He said the police offered more sacrifices than other forces in maintaining peace and stability in the country. He asked the police not to interfere in areas out of their jurisdiction.

At the end, high-ranking Herat police officials were presented medals and shields.
