KABUL’s rights.

Semin Hasanzada, deputy information and culture minister, was speaking at a gathering organized by the Afghan Journalists Safety Committee (AJSC) on the eve of International Women’s Day in Kabul.

She said Islam had given women special rights centuries ago. “But unfortunately our societies are violating these rights today.”

Hasanzada said drastic changes came to the lives of Afghanistan’s women during the past 13 years, under former president Hamid Karzai, and their contribution to the media was significant.

“Our media use women for aesthetic purposes and physical beauty instead of focusing on their intellectual abilities to transform the society,” she remarked.
