MAZAR-I-SHARIF (Pajhwok): Dozens of people with disabilities on Thursday received certificates on completing a vocational training programme and some were given loans to start their own businesses in northern Balkh province.

The vocational training course was organised by the Ministry of Labour, Social Affairs, Martyrs and Disabled (MLSAMD) with financial support from the Swedish Committee for Afghanistan (SCA).

Gulalai Hotak, the Social Affairs Director, said 88 disabled persons, including females, completed the training in tailoring, sewing, embroidery, carpentry and other handicrafts. The participants were given certificates and necessary tools.

Mohammad Nasim, a resident of Dawlatabad district, who’s both legs are disabled, said he completed an eight month course in carpentry. “Today I received certificate and some machinery related to carpentry and I plan to open my own shop.”

In addition, the SCA also distributed small loans among 608 disabled persons, including 280 females, to enable them to start personal businesses.

Shehla, a resident of Mazar-i-Sharif, who could not see, said she received 30,000 afghanis in loan from the SCA. With the amount, she said could buy sewing machines.

But Shehla accused the government of ignoring people with disabilities. She said the government was paying no proper attention to problems facing the special people.

Hotak said the government would utilise all available resources to improve living style of the special persons.
