MAZAR-I-SHARIF (Pajhwok): The uncertain electoral process has had no significant impact on the affairs and revenues of the municipality department of northern Balkh province, the mayor said on Wednesday.

Mohammad Yunus Muqim told Pajhwok Afghan News that there had been no decline or increase in Mazar-i-Sharif municipality’s income, compared with previous year’s revenue.

He said this year’s revenue of the municipality had been estimated at 350 million afghanis and the collection affairs were going well. So far 210 million afghanis revenue had been collected, he added.

Muqim said the bulk of revenue came in form of taxes on commercial goods arriving at dry ports, cleanliness, trade contracts and urban taxes.

However, he said the overall revenue of the province had decreased as a result of the electoral crisis but that of the municipality’s income remained unaffected.

The mayor hoped they would be able to collect the projected revenue until the end of the year. He said if local residents cooperated with municipality workers, the department’s income would increase with each passing year.

He complained many Mazar-i-Sharif residents still failed to properly pay the cleanliness tax, discouraging efforts at bringing about positive change.

But citizens said if the municipality performed its duty in an effective way, locals would definitely cooperate.

A resident of the second municipal district, Attiqullah, said their area had never been properly cleaned by the municipality. Garbage piles could be seen swelling in the middle of the Mohib Square, he said.

He said people were yet to believe in effectiveness of the municipality’s works, thus refusing to pay taxes on time.

But the mayor said the city of Mazar-i-Sharif could never be cleaned if locals did not cooperate with his department. He said the cleanliness was carried out in return for taxes, which should be paid on time.
