KABUL (Pajhwok): Second Vice-President Sarwar Danish on Saturday underlined the need for a careful review of and amendments to the constitution.

Speaking at a research conference here, the second vice-president said that all constitutions needed to be open to change in line with the prevailing circumstances.

He said reviews and changes were the only way to make a constitution address the needs of society’s constitution is no exception, and needs to undergo changes.”

Danish called the present basic law the most advanced and modern constitution Afghanistan had seen in the last nine decades. But he acknowledged there were numerous challenges when it came to implementation.

Based on an agreement between President Ashraf Ghani and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Abdullah Abdullah, the constitution would be amended in the next two years.

Danish asked scholars, legal experts and political figures to thoroughly study the constitution and based on national and international standards come up with a list of amendments.

Having 12 chapters and 162 articles, the new constitution was ratified by a Loya Jirga in early 2004 and subsequently approved by former president Hamid Karzai.
