KABUL (Pajhwok): Abdul Ali Muhammadi, legal advisor to President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani, said on Sunday the present situation in the Attorney General’s Office (AGO) was unacceptable and officials involved in corruption would be dealt with severely.

At a gathering marking “National Constitution Week”, Muhammadi said judicial organs were the guarantor of political stability in a country and unless they were reformed, there would be no hope for professionalism in other departments.

He said the unity government would hold everyone accountable for their deeds and misconduct in judicial organs would not be tolerated. “The Attorney General’s Office should change. The present situation is not acceptable.

“I am grateful to those who perform their duties here with low wages, but I will deal severity with the corrupt in this organisation,” he warned

Without naming anybody, he said, those involved in graft had been identified. “With the rule of law, we can bring society together. If we accept the rule of law, society will also abide; otherwise we cannot expect the public to accept laws.”

Mohammad Abde, head of the judicial committee of parliament, asked the president to end the culture of impunity and venality in the country.

“The president has the armed forces and other personnel behind him. He should not be compassionate to those who have committed felony and crime,” he remarked.
