JALALABAD (Pajhwok): A number of residents and activists of social society networks of eastern provinces on Sunday demanded that the promised delegation to be sent by the president should thoroughly investigate rampant administrative corruption and spiraling insecurity in the eastern provinces.

President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani on Saturday held a video conference with governors of four eastern provinces and talked with them in details on issues concerning security, good governance and development.

Ahmad Zia Abdulzai, the spokesman for the Nangarhar governor, told Pajhwok Afghan News that governors, police chiefs, and army officers from Nangarhar, Laghman, Nuristan and Kunar took part in the conference held in Shahi Palace.

The officials presented their reports and grievances on several issues to the president. Maulvi Attaullah Ludin, Nangarhar acting governor, acknowledged corruption was rampant in Torkham port’s weight scale department and requested President Ghani to shut it down. He alleged 143 million afs corruption took place there on a monthly basis.

Earlier, it had been decided that the Presidential Palace would send a high-powered delegation to be headed by the interior minister to the eastern zone to probe into corruption allegations and deteriorated law and order in the eastern provinces.

Zabihullah, Nangarhar council members, told Pajhwok Afghan News that the president’s video call was just a formality and the officials did not share exact details with the president.

He said that insecurity and corruption increased manifold as compared to past and people were feeling themselves insecure.

Khalid Sadaat, a civil society activist, said: “Unfortunately, the president asking about problems from the officials and he should ask from people instead. Law and order has been deteriorated and administrative corruption is at its peak.”

He suggested that the president should hold meetings with people, tribal elders and religious leaders of the eastern provinces to know about the ground realities.

Zabihullah Ghazi, a journalist and social activist from Kunar, Sahib Dad, another social society activist from Nuristan, and Zahidullah, the resident from Laghman province also expressed their concerns over insecurity and corruption in the eastern provinces.
