KABUL (Pajhwok): The cabinet nominees to head interior and foreign ministries have renounced their foreign citizenship, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed on Saturday.
Ahmad Shekib Mustaghni, the ministry spokesman, told Pajhwok Afghan News they had received documents from Dutch and British embassies confirming Salahuddin Rabbani and Noorul Haq Ulumi had cancelled their citizenship.
Rabbani held British nationality and Ulumi was a Dutch citizen. Mustaghni said they had sent the documents to the lower house, which would start vote of confidence proceedings soon.
The documents were being evaluated by a special commission of the Wolesi Jirga, he said. “The papers are final and show the two men have formally renounced their dual citizenship.”
After a parliamentary panel rejected the nomination of seven cabinet picks with dual nationality, the government formed a commission comprising representatives of foreign, interior, justice ministries and the National Directorate of Security to pursue renouncing dual nationality by cabinet nominees.
Other dual citizen cabinet nominees include Ahmad Syar Mahjoor, justice minister-designate, Aysultan Khairy, information and culture minister-designate, Faizullah Kakar, counter-narcotics minister-designate, Shah Zaman Maiwandi, urban development minister-designate, and Sadaat Naderi, labour and social affairs minister-designate
Mustaghni said the remaining candidates were also in the process of renouncing their second nationality. The Constitution authorises lawmakers to approve or reject individuals with dual nationality nominated for ministerial posts.
