Food items disrtributed to nearly 1,000 families in Kabul

KABUL Food Program (WFP) distributed food items to nearly 1,000 displaced families in the capital Kabul.

The mentioned food items were distributed to 670 families in Qambar square area of Kabul, who had been displaced from Kandahar, Uruzgan and Zabul provinces and to 323 Jogy families camped in the same area.

WFP spokesman in Kabul, Wahidullah Amani, told Pajhwok Afghan News each family received 50 kilograms of wheat, a 5-kg tin of vegetable oil and a half of kilo of salt. These items had been bought with financial assistance from USAID and other donors, he said.

According to Mr. Amani, the families had twice received similar assistance in previous months.

“WFP’s assistance also includes pulses besides wheat, vegetable oil and salt, but unfortunately for the time being pulses is not available in our warehouses,” the spokesman said.

Happy with the assistance, the displaced families called for more aid. Omar Khan, one of the beneficiaries, standing next to the wheat bag and other items he received, said the assistance was insufficient and the families needed more such items.

“God bless them for assisting us, but these items are insufficient, we need to be provided more,” said the 60-year-old.

Khan said his family had 11 members and none had a job to support the family. “What should we do…stage robberies? Or kill people, I swear we cannot find a job.”

Faiza, who lives in the Jogyano camp, was holding her one-year-old child on her lap and had covered her body in a black shawl. She said: “We were previously given twice wheat, ghee, salt and pulses. We are satisfied with the assistance.”

She said her spouse ran a hand-cart in a fruit market and he earned from 100 afghanis to 200 Afghanis a day, but the income was not sufficient to meet all needs of the family.  She urged the government to continue assisting the displaced families.

In addition, according to WFP’s officials 3,500 metric tons of food items were distributed to needy families in Afghanistan’s 46 districts and more than 1,200 metric tons to 8,016 families in Kabul during the current winter.
