German FM in Kabul for talks on poll crisis
KABUL (Pajhwok): German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier arrived in Kabul on Saturday to discuss with Afghan leaders the months-long electoral impasse and reassure Afghanistan of his country continuous future support.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) said Steinmeier visited German troops stationed in northern Balkh province soon after his arrival.
The foreign minister is scheduled to hold talks with President Hamid Karzai, presidential candidates Dr. Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai, Dr. Abdullah Abdullah and the UN envoy in Afghanistan on the ongoing electoral crisis, a German radio reported.
He will be meeting with his Afghan counterpart Zarar Ahmad Usmani, the Afghan foreign ministry said in a statement.
The German official would is expected stress In his talks with the presidential candidates the formation of a national unity government.
Steinmeier promised Germany would provide all assistance to the next Afghan government.
