GHAZNI CITY (Pajhwok): Some prisoners have gone on hunger strike at the central jail in southern Ghazni province against delays in the investigation of their cases by judicial organs, an official said on Sunday.

The governor’s spokesman, Shafiq Nang, told Pajhwok Afghan News a number of inmates were refusing to take food in protest against corruption in judicial offices and slow-paced progress in their cases.

He said the provincial administration had started efforts to end the hunger strike. Nang did not provide exact figures for the striking prisoners.

An inmate from inside the jail told Pajhwok Afghan News over the telephone that more than 10 prisoners were on hunger strike and two of them had their mouths plastered.

Noorullah said their cases remained uninvestigated, prompting them to go on hunger strike.

Another inmate, Roohullah, said those giving bribes to judicial officials were released, but the poor inmates remained in prison without their cases being cleared. This scribe tried to contact the jail officials, but failed.
