KABUL (Pajhwok): Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Abdullah Abdullah on Monday said recent avalanches and flooding claimed 300 precious lives nationwide and directed the Emergency Response Committee (ERC) to intensify efforts at coping with fresh flooding.

Addressing a cabinet meeting, Abdullah said reports about life losses and property damage continued to pour in from affected provinces.

He said new reports indicated the death toll from avalanches and flooding topped 300 in 19 provinces, but the exact amount of damage to properties was yet to be ascertained.

Panjshir was the hardest-hit central province where the death toll was above 200.

Abdullah said the recent calamities should serve a best lesson for ERC and the government in general to be fully prepared for such incidents in the future.

“In our response to natural disasters, we should be fully prepared to deal with them and take all aspects into account because flooding is expected in the days to come,” he added.

The avalanches had disturbed telecommunications networks in remote villages, creating problems for ERC officials to reach out to local residents, said Abdullah, asking the authorities concerned to pay special attention in this regard.
