KABUL) on Monday named 29 members of different provincial councils (PC) as senators. Another five PC members will be nominated later on.

IEC Chairman Hotak Rahman Commission told a press conference in Kabul that the 29 public representatives had been issued with certificates and officially introduced as members of the upper house.

Of the 102 upper house members, the statutory number of senators is three times the number of existing provinces. Indirectly elected members include one representative from each of the 34 provincial councils, serving a four-year term. And one representative from each district council, serving a three-year term.

A third of members are nominated by the president. But in the past, district council elections did not place and the members were introduced by provincial councils.

If the district council elections are not held once again, 34 members of the upper house will come from provincial councils in line with the past practice, according to Hotaki, who sought credit for conducting presidential and provincial polls.

Mohammad Alam Ezedyar, a senator from Panjsher who received a certificate, acknowledged: “During our previous tenures, we could not frame a good rule against corruption, but this time around, we will try to make an effective law.”
