MAIMANA (Pajhwok): Seven Taliban insurgents were killed and 10 others injured in clearing operations in the Shirin Tagab district of northern Faryab province, officials said on Thursday.
Clashes between security forces and militants lasted three hours along the Maimana-Jawzjan highway, the provincial police chief told Pajhwok Afghan News.
Col. Mohammad Naeem Andarabi said the operations were launched after they received tips about a group of insurgents gathering in the Faizabad area of the district.
Abdul Ahad Elbik, a provincial council member, said Taliban commander Qari Jamal was killed in the operations. He was responsible for killing two university students.
According to Andarabi, in a separate incident in the same district, two policemen sustained injuries after they were attacked by rebels.
Five insurgents and two policemen were also killed and seven civilians injured in overnight clashes in Qaisar district, he added.
But,Taliban claimed they group had killed four local police personnel.
