TEHRAN (Pajhwok): The Iranian anti-drug campaign director on Wednesday while ruling out poppy cultivation in Iran said that more than 324,000 addicted persons in his country had imported the substance from Afghanistan.
Mahmood Bayat expressed the views at a time when Afghan delegation comprised officials from the Ministry of Information and Culture Affairs, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and representatives from Afghan media were in Tehran on an official visit.
During a meeting with Afghan officials, Bayat expressed concerns over the growth of poppy cultivation in Afghanistan and said there was dire need for regional cooperation to eliminate the growing and smuggling of the illicit crop.
He said there was high demand of narcotics in Europe and leaders from that part of world should adopt measures in order to control the situation.
Abdul Baser Hamidi, counselor of Afghanistan Embassy in Tehran, told Pajhwok Afghan News both Iran and Afghanistan had signed a memorandum of understanding to stop the smuggling of drugs in the region.
