KABUL (Pajhwok): Hundreds of Kabul residents on Tuesday staged a protest demonstration, seeking an oversight role for provincial councils.
On Wednesday, the lower house rejected a clause of the law on provincial councils, barring the elected bodies from evaluating the performance of local departments.
Some members of the Kabul provincial council joined around 400 protestors in the morning near the Eidgah Mosque.
Council head Syed Abdul Rahman told Pajhwok Afghan News its members were also elected by the people and oversight on the performance of local departments were their right.
With the assembly decision, he said, the government would give its departments an open hand to commit corruption. “If they don’t give us our right, we will continue protesting.”
Roohullah Waqif, a member of the PC and one of the protestors, said: “Oversight is our legal right. If stripped of this power, we would close all highways and continue protesting.”
Haji Rahimullah, another demonstrator, said they would not open their offices until the president met their demands.
Two days back, President Ghani asked the Independent Directorate of Local Governance (IDLG) to investigate PCs oversight role and draft legislation for approval.
Ghani also met representatives of the councils and agreed with them on how they should monitor activities of local departments.
