KANDAHAR CITY (Pajhwok): Condemning insurgent attacks on residents of Dangam district of eastern Kunar province, the Kandahar provincial council (PC) on Thursday asked the government to increase the number of security forces in the troubled town.

The public representatives held a special meeting in this southern city of Kandahar to discuss the situation in Dangam and express solidarity with families of the victims.

After days of attacks, Afghan security forces launched operations against militants in Dangam on Thursday, a day after two leaders of the uprising group were killed on the fourth day of clashes between heavily-armed militants and villagers.

Backed by tens of Pakistani rebels, Taliban Inayatullah, told Pajhwok Afghan News.

A member of Kandahar provincial council, Nimatullah Wafa, said hundreds of insurgents, a majority of them Pakistanis, had been attacking hapless residents who stood up against their atrocities and intimidation.

He called as painful and against Islamic and human principles the torching of civilian homes by the armed rebels.

Wafa urged the government to increase the number of security forces in Kunar so that they could deal with insurgents and prevent Pakistani rocket attacks.

Similar views were expressed by other members of the council and asked the government to intensify its efforts at reversing the tide of insecurity in much of the country.

As insecurity increased in the country, the Wolesi Jirga and provinces, particularly  the attacks in Dangam.
