KANDAHAR CITY (Pajhwok): Primary schoolchildren have been without text books in southern Kandahar province over the past six years, a problem now stands resolved, an official said on Monday.

Kandahar Education Director Abdul Qaad Paiwastoon told Pajhwok Afghan News that primary school students had been lacking text books for the last six years and as a result, the education process had been slow.

He said the textbooks’ shortage issue was resolved as summer vacations ended and the new academic year began in Kandahar.

Paiwastoon said the Ministry of Education had provided 932,000 books for primary schools in Kandahar and the books would be delivered to students soon.

High school students did not face a shortage of books, he said, adding that the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and other donor organisations in the past had been assisting students by providing them with stationary materials but now the aid had decreased, making it difficult for the education department to address all such issues.

He said the Kandahar education department was trying to appoint high school graduates as primary schoolteachers.

His deputy Ewaz Nazari said they planned to set up libraries in 40 schools of the province at a cost five million afghanis, with each library containing 1,000 books.
