Karzai alleges US deceiving Afghanistan

Karzai alleges US deceiving Afghanistan

Feb 22, 2015 - 19:12

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): Former president Hamid Karzai on Sunday accused the United States of deceiving Afghanistaninfo-icon saying that after securing its military bases in Afghanistan it stopped fighting the Talibaninfo-icon militants.

The former president expressed these views at a seminar titled: “Tradition of Non-Violence in the Region; Mahatma Gandhi and Khan Abdul Ghafar Khan – the two leading flag bearers of non violence”, conducted by Rana Think Tank in collaboration with the Embassy of India in Kabul.

The seminar was also attended by Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Abdullah Abdullah, former national security advisor, Rangin Dadfar Spanta, and other dignitaries from India and Pakistaninfo-icon.

Karzai blasted the American and Pakistani policies towards fighting extremism in the region. “Pakistan with the help of US used extremists against the Soviet Union and then used it against Afghanistan and India in the region.”

“We waged Jihadinfo-icon and liberated our country. The benefits went to the US that became the sole superpower, Germany became unified, Europe expanded, Pakistan became an atomic power with a strong army, but Afghanistan is the country that suffered only,” the outspoken Karzai added.

After the Soviet’s defeat, the US abandoned Afghanistan to Pakistan as a result Afghanistan lost its army and government structure.

“After 9/11, the trend continued and nobody listened to us. Finally Musharraf (former Pakistani dictator) admitted himself it was Pakistan behind the destruction of Afghanistan.”

Karzai said he had also repeatedly warned Pakistan’s officials to stop using extremism as a foreign policy tool and to not bomb innocent families in Waziristan, Dir and Bajawar tribal region.

He was of the opinion that using force would breed more extremism and the menace needed political solutions. He called on Afghan Taliban once again to join the country’s peace process.

Abdullah Abdullah stressed that peace was need of the hour, but insisted that the process should be transparent and carried forward with the consultation Afghans.
