KABUL for the sake of lasting peace and stability in the region.

Addressing an Independence Day ceremony at the heavily-fortified Presidential Palace in Kabul, Karzai also underlined the need for the early announcement of the runoff election.

Besides a large number of government officials, both presidential candidates Dr. Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai and Dr. Abdullah Abdullah participated in the simple but dignified ceremony.

In his brief speech, the president greeted the nation on its 95th Independence Day. He attributed Afghanistan’s freedom to people’s unity and sacrifices.

The Afghans stoutly defended themselves and achieved freedom when the British mounted an attack on their homeland, he recalled, urging the people to work together for the progress, and prosperity of the country.

He was optimistic the election results would be announced soon and the agreement inked between the presidential runners implemented in letter and spirit.

“I hope the election results will produce a government owned by all Afghans,” the president remarked, as the candidates pledged to form a strong government to overcome problems, including insecurity.

“I hope we stay united… so that our country is led toward peace and prosperity. I hope that Afghanistan’s election has a result soon. The people are waiting impatiently for the result,” the president continued.

He went on to reiterate: “Both of our brothers (Ghani and Abdullah) will reach an agreement so that Afghanistan soon has an inclusive government in which nobody is left out.”

The president also placed a floral wreath at the independence monument. Former King Ghazi Amanullah won independence from Great Britain, though Afghanistan has never been a British colony.
