SHARAN (Pajhwok): President Hamid Karzai has upgraded southeastern Paktika to a 2nd grade province, an Independent Directorate of Local Governance (IDLG) official announced on Tuesday.
Reading out a message from Karzai at an Independence Day function here, Abdul Ghayas Wardak said the strength of government departments in the province would be increased.
As a result, he added, Paktika’s annual budget would be increased and the governor post upgraded. Governor Mohibullah Samim, provincial officials and former jihadi leaders were also in attendance.
In his speech, Samim greeted the nation on its 95th Independence Day. “Led by Ghazi Amanullah Khan, the Afghans taught the mighty British Empire a lesson they have not yet forgotten,” he remarked.
Former deputy governor and jihadi commander Mohammad Zadran said the Afghans being a pro-freedom people would never accept foreign influence. He urged youth to be ready for all sacrifices to defend their motherland.
