KHOST CITY (Pajhwok): The Khost Municipality on Saturday claimed a 55 percent increase in its revenue in the first nine months of the current solar year, linking the rise to a crackdown on administrative graft in the southeastern province.
Mayor Karamat Khan Khpalwak told a news conference in Khost City the municipality income was 16 million afs last year. But the revenue rose to 35 million afs as of December, the official said.
He ascribed the higher income to a consistent anti-corruption campaign and honest tax payments by traders. “I had promised after taking over as mayor three months ago that I will wage a war on graft and inefficiency in the municipality.”
Khpalwak, who claimed providing better services to the people as part of an urban programme, lashed out at some government departments of seeking to dodge the cleanliness tax. He urged all concerned to discharge their duty in keeping the city clean.
But residents believe the municipality needs urgent steps to improve its services in terms of resolving public problems. One of them, Mohammad Ilyas, said urban expansion should lead to resolution of civic problems.
In the summer, he recalled, floodwaters gushed into the provincial capital. As a result, the city was littered with mud and sand and a serious threat was posed to civilian houses and commercial plazas, the resident added.
