KABUL (Pajhwok): President Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai on Wednesday said security in northern Kunduz province topped his government’s priorities.

Ahmadzai was speaking to elders and influential figures in Kunduz through a video conference, a statement from the Presidential Palace in Kabul said.

The elders shared with Ahmadzai problems and demands concerning security, education and roads in the province. They demanded sustainable peace, improved trade activity at the Sher Khan Port and the activation of the Spin Zar Entrepreneur.

They also called for the establishment of a Darul Uloom, a township for education department staff, cold storages for agriculture products and the construction an international airport in their province.

In response, the president acknowledged that Kunduz played a key role in Afghanistan’s economy and that was why peace in the province was one of his government’s top priorities.

The president hinted at initiating a special programme to strengthen security in the province, saying the plan would be implemented soon.

Ghani also assured that the ministries concerned would take concrete steps to address all problems facing Kunduz dwellers and promised personal interest in this regard.

With Ahmadzai, acting interior, economy, education, agriculture, public works and energy ministers were present during the video conference that gave a clear message to the people of Kunduz that the new government was serious in resolving their problems.
