Pakistan hangs 2 convicted militants

KABUL has executed two senior insurgents in Faisalabad, a populated district of Punjab province.

Dr. Usman, a former soldier of the Pakistan Army, was executed for his role in an attack on the army headquarters in 2009 in Rawalpindi. Arshad Mehmood was hanged for an assassination attempt on Gen. (R) Pervez Musharraf, the country’s former president.

Stringent security measures were adopted around the Faisalabad central and district prisons during the executions. Gen. Raheel Sharif on Thursday signed black warrant for Dr Usman.

The massacre of 141 people, including 132 schoolchildren, in Peshawar by Taliban militants prompted Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to lift the moratorium on the capital punishment.

In 2011, Dr. Usman was apprehended after being wounded during a raid on the army headquarters. He was later sentenced to death in 2011 by a military court.

Mehmood was among the five sentenced to be hanged for their role in the Al Qaeda-inspired assassination attempt on Musharraf’s life in late 2003.
