KABUL (Pajhwok): A parliamentary panel has found educational documents of the refugee and repatriation minister-designate questionable, a lawmaker said on Saturday.

President Ashraf Ghani introduced 24 cabinet nominees and heads of two independent departments to lower house for a vote of confidence.

A seven-member panel of the lower house, including representatives of international affairs, education and central inspection commissions, to verify the documents.

Panel member Jafar Mehdawi said despite not having a 12th grade certificate, Sayed Hussain Alami Balkhi’s bachelor degree had been approved.

“Moments ago, I spoke to acting education minister Asif Nang. He said Balkhi did not have any documents of the 12th class,” the MP added.

Furthermore, Mehdawi said Balkhi had received his bachelor degree from Iran in 1991, but 14 years later, he completed his 14th class in Kabul.

But education commission head Kamal Naser Usooli said in line with the law they were only evaluating the nominees’ higher education documents.

The Ministry of Higher Education has also verified Balkhi’s documents. “I cannot say that a nominee’s documents have issues only because of someone else’s wishes.”

Deputy Speaker Sediq Ahmad Osmani, who chaired the session, said only the education commission’s findings were acceptable to the house and Balkhi could speak about his programmes.
