KABUL Abdul Shafi, also known as Maulvi Mazini, has passed away at the ripe age of 90, his son said on Sunday.

Maulvi Fazal Hadi told Pajhwok Afghan News breathed his last at the Aga Khan Hospital in Pakistan’s port city of Karachi late on Saturday. He was recently hospitalised in the neighbouring country.

Abdul Shafi’s funeral prayer will be offered at the Eidgah Mosque in Jalalabad, the capital of eastern Nangarhar province, in the afternoon.

Hailing from Rodat district, the deceased had imparted religious knowledge to tens of thousands of people, acknowledged Hasan Haqyar, a scholar and political analyst.

Following graduation from Darul Ulum Arabia in Kabul, Abdul Shafi served as a teacher at the Najmul Madaris School in Nangarhar. In the wake of the Soviet invasion, he migrated to Pakistan, where he continued to act as a teacher.
