KABUL (Pajhwok): Security forces are determined to make the counter-narcotics drive a success, the acting interior minister said on Friday.

Gen. Mohammad Ayub Salangi promised the government, having the required political will, would eradicate the menace of drugs from the country.

Since Afghan forces remained busy providing security for the presidential and provincial elections this year, poppy cultivation and opium production increased.

However, he added, the authorities were committed to netting drug traffickers, and the security forces had devised plans to prevent opium cultivation and smuggling.

“All available resources will be used to get rid of of drugs. In this regard, we remain determined and have a political will,” the acting minister reiterated.
Earlier in the week, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) said poppy cultivation in Afghanistan had increased by 7 percent and opium production by 17 percent in 2014.
