KANDAHAR CITY (Pajhwok): Following transition from NATO) has dramatically increased in southern Kandahar province, an official said on Wednesday.

Abdul Qudus Baes, a peace committee official, told Pajhwok Afghan News the body had decided to visit each district of the province to push the cause of durable peace in Kandahar.

“We have already travelled to Dand and Arghandab district, where we talked to tribal elders and residents about the need for peace and drummed up support for ANSF,” he said.

“The purpose of our visits is to promote public awareness about the importance of stability, demonstration of patriotism and educate the masses on the negative effects of poppy cultivation,” the official added.

He called upon the armed opponents of the government to renounce violence and join the peace process. In addition, he urged members of the peace panel to step up contacts with the people regarding the imperative of stability.

In Dand district, the body organised a gathering attended by Haji Atta Mohammad Ahmadi, head of the committee, Syed Mohammad Hashim, the district chief, and tribal elders.

Haji Atta Mohammad told the gathering ANSF had taken security charge and it was the responsibility of people to support them. The committee was asked to provide people a peaceful environment.

District chief Syed Mohammad Hashim said residents of Dand were peaceful and backed the government and armed forces under all circumstance. He hoped public support for the security institutions would continue.
