Taxi drivers call for ban on non-custom paid cars

PUL-I-KHUMRI (Pajhwok): As a token of protest, dozens of taxi drivers on Sunday parked their vehicles in Pul-i-Khumri, the capital of northern Baghlan province, demanding ban on non-custom paid cars.

Mohammad Anwar, a taxi driver, told Pajhwok Afghan News for the last two years powerful individuals in connivance of police used non-custom paid vehicles, which had badly affected the business of taxi cars having genuine documents.

He said that cars without valid documents had been brought to the market with low prices and were used as taxis in Pul-i-Khumri. The capital city had 500 non-custom paid vehicles, he noted.  

Another taxi driver Mohammad Jan complained against the influx of unregistered cars and urged the departments concerned to ban them.

He said: “I pay taxes to the government from my hard-earned money but the non-custom paid vehicles earn more than me.”

Traffic Director Col. Ghulam Dastagir Humayun said Pul-i-Khumri was a small city, where more than 1,800 cars had been issued taxi licenses. In addition, he said, around 300 other vehicles were also being used as taxis.  

He noted the majority of non-custom paid vehicles belonged to government officials and they did not allow the traffic officials to perform their duty.
