MAIMANA (Pajhwok): Neighbouring Turkmenistan has failed to increase voltage of electricity it has extended to three northern Afghan provinces, an official said on Sunday.

Syed Abdul Hamid, electricity department head for northwestern Faryab province, said the price of firewood and fuel had gone up due electricity shortage in the province.

He said Turkmenistan had been supplying electricity to Faryab, Jawzjan and Sar-i-Pul provinces, but consumers had long been complaining about its low voltage.

He said the diplomatic mission of Turkmenistan had promised to resolve the issue of low voltage within few days, but the problem continued.

The official said a new grid station had recently been established in Karki area of Turkmenistan to export 220 kilowatts of electricity to the three provinces.
