WASHINGTON (Pajhwok): The UN Security Council on Monday condemned the terrorist attack in Paktika reiterating that no terrorist act can reverse the path towards Afghan-led peace, democracy and stability in the country.

In a statement, the Security Council expressed their deep sympathy and condolences to the families of the victims, and to the people and government of Afghanistan. They wished the injured a speedy recovery.

The 15-member powerful body, reiterated their serious concern at the threats posed by the Taliban, Al-Qaida and other terrorist and extremist groups, and illegal armed groups to the local population, national security forces, international military, and international assistance efforts in Afghanistan, particularly in light of recent terrorist attacks elsewhere in the country.

Underlining the need to bring perpetrators, organizers, financiers and sponsors of these reprehensible acts of terrorism to justice, the Security Council reaffirmed that terrorism in all its forms and manifestations is criminal and unjustifiable, regardless of its motivation, wherever, whenever and by whomsoever committed.

In a separate statement, the UN Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon, condemned the suicide attack on civilians in Afghanistan’s Paktika province which killed at least 50 people and injured more than 60 others.

He denounced this attack against men, women and children who were enjoying a community sporting event not only as a grave violation of Afghan and international law, but as fundamentally abhorrent.

The Secretary-General expressed his deepest sympathies to the families of those killed and injured, and his steadfast solidarity with the people of Afghanistan in refusing to be cowed by such attacks. He hopes those responsible will be brought swiftly to justice.
