WASHINGTON (Pajhwok): US Secretary of State John Kerry on Monday praised India’s developmental activities in Afghanistan as part of New Delhi’s commitment to regional stability.
“India has already shown a deep commitment to regional stability with the generous investments in Afghanistan,” Kerry said in a major foreign policy speech on India here.
Kerry is due travel to India later this week to co-chair the 5th annual India-US Strategic Dialogue along with his Indian counterpart, Sushma Swaraj.
The current political situation in Afghanistan is expected to be a major issue of discussion between the two countries.
“At this critical moment of transition and in the coming months, support from all across the international community will be vitally important,” he said.
Kerry said in the coming days, he will continue to work closely with President Hamid Karzai, with the two candidates (Abdullah Abdullah and Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai) with the United Nations in order to provide Afghanistan with support during the transition.
“We look forward to working also with India on this, and we look forward to India engaging with its neighbors so that Afghanistan’s connections to the region and the world are defined by the opportunity that they can create together,” Kerry said.
