KABUL, an official said on Sunday.

A memorandum of understanding was signed between Wasil Noor Mohmand, acting minister of labour, social affairs and disabled, and Claude Jibidar, WFP country director.

Mohmand said the WFP assistance included 270 metric tonnes of food items such as wheat, cooking oil, pulses and salt that would be distributed to the needy people in 85 districts of 20 provinces.

He added around 610,000 people — 70 percent of them women and 30 percent youth — would benefit from the aid. The food packages would go to poor individuals in far-flung areas. Participants of vocational training will also benefit from the food assistance.

The acting minster believed Afghanistan could become independent economically only when it had skilled manpower and generated job opportunities within the country.

The WFO country director said: “Women would be able to learn skills and in this way they would be able to finance themselves in the future.” He reiterated majority of the beneficiary of the project would be women.

Another memorandum of understanding was signed between Wasil Noor Mohmand and Children Support Project Director. Mohmand said the project worth $26 million would was aimed to ensure the treatment of disabled children.
