KHOST CITY (Pajhwok): The construction work on a dam to irrigate farmlands in Ismail Khail and Mandozi districts of southeastern Khost province has been launched, an official said Tuesday.
Governor Abdul Jabbar Naimi told Pajhwok Afghan News the dam was 70 metres long, which would take 13 months to complete.
The project, he said cost 11 million afghanis financed by the World Bank and it would help irrigate around 2,500 acres of land, he said. “This dam is very important for irrigation purposes and the residents have been long demanding its construction,” he added.
Haji Ahmad Gul, a tribal elder from Ismail Khail district, said that a previously built of stones dam had been damaged by floods that deprived farmers from irrigation water.
“Stones and sands cannot resist floods and the new dam will help solve our problems,” he hoped.
Wazir Khan, a district council member, expressed satisfaction over the construction of the dam and said that residents would maintain security of the project.
