KHOST CITY (Pajhwok): The governor on Saturday inaugurated construction work on six small dams and retaining walls on a natural stream to bring under irrigation thousands of acres of land in southeastern Khost province.
Abdul Jabbar Naeemi told Pajhwok Afghan News the projects on the Matoon River would cost 62 million afghanis being provided by the World Bank.
“These six projects will irrigate nearly 5500 acres of land on both sides of the stream and will increase their production,” said the governor, who added residents of the areas lacked sufficient water to irrigate their fields.
A tribal elder in the area, Sharifullah, told Pajhwok Afghan News said the projects once completed would help farmers timely water their crops and increase agriculture output.
“Previously, Matoon area residents would collectively build small dams, but floods would wash them away.”
Another elder Haji Rassoul Mohammad said thousands of families would benefit from the projects and would have a direct impact on their economy.
The elder said they fully cooperated with the provincial government and expected it to launch more similar welfare projects in their area.
Last week, construction work on a dam was launched in the Ismail Khel district. The 11 million afs project is funded by the World Bank.
