QALAT (Pajhwok): Suspected Taliban insurgents shot injured a provincial council candidate in the Shinkai district of southern Zabul province, police said on Friday.
Police chief Brig Gen. Ghulam Sakhi Rogh Lewanai told Pajhwok Afghan News the gunmen broke into the house of candidate Mohammad Yaqub Sewriwal in the Ahmad Shahkhel village of Sewri area on Thursday night and shot him injured.
But police had been quick reaching the scene to assist the candidate, he said.
A resident of the area, Abdul Ghani, told Pajhwok Afghan News that Sewriwal was guest in a nearby village and was attacked on his way back home.
He said the gunmen shot the candidate in the leg and he was currently being treated in a hospital in neighbouring Kandahar province.
The Taliban have so far said nothing about the incident that comes three months after the insurgents attacked Sewriwal’s house. The candidate survived that attack but his car was set alight by the attackers.
