TALOQAN (Pajhwok): Eight policemen were killed in a Taliban ambush in the Khwaja Ghar district of northern Takhar province on Thursday, an official said.

Sunnatullah Taimur, the governor’s spokesman, told Pajhwok Afghan News the policemen came under attack in the Darwaza Camp area of the district at about 8.00am.

At least four Afghan Local Police (ALP) personnel and two members of the Afghan National Police were forced to come out of their vehicle before being shot to death by the insurgents.

The officials were on their way home from Pul-i-Momin area, according to Taimur, who said another four policemen, including a commander, were killed when the rebels fired their vehicle in the same locality.

“The Taliban attacked the ALP pick-up and the ensuing firefight lasted 20 minutes. At least two attackers were also killed in the gunbattle,” the gubernatorial spokesman added.

Mohammad Omar, the district chief, identified the slain ALP commander as Safar Ali. “Security forces are often attacked in the insecure area. We have lost eight men despite tight security.”
