In Daikundi, sharp spike in robberies sparks concerns

NEILI (Pajhwok): Residents of Neili, the capital of central Daikundi province, have expressed concern over increased robbery cases, saying the thieves steal things even from mosques.

They said their belongings and motorcycles were stolen but police officers still failed to detain anyone. Security personnel were urged to take serious action against robbers.

A number of dwellers, fearing a spike in robberies, called increased vigil during Nawroz (Persian new year) celebrations, starting from March 21.

Fida Hussain, hailing from Chahar Dasht area, told Pajhwok Afghan News two days ago the robbers stole all items, including carpets and loudspeakers, from a mosque in their village. Solar panels were pilfered from his house last night.

Seminary Director Hujjatul Islam confirmed robberies at 15 mosques of the city in the past one week. The issue has been shared with the police headquarters and the governor’s house, but no action has been taken.

Another resident, Syed Ali Shah, said his motorcycle was also stolen in front of the municipality. “I entered the department for some work and parked my bike outside. When I came out, the bike was nowhere to be seen.”

Shah claimed drug addicts were involved in most of such incidents.

Teachers’ Training Center Director Mohammad Hamdam was wounded seriously last week when gunmen stabbed him. Currently under treatment in Zahra Hospital in Neili, he said: “I don’t know who has attacked me. Police should identify the perpetrators.”

Pajhwok repeatedly tried to seek the views of security officials in the regard, but they declined commenting and said they had been barred from talking to the media.
