Ghazni police chief denies passengers’ kidnapping

GHAZNI CITY (Pajhwok): The police chief for southern Ghazni province on Friday rejected reports that the Taliban-Kandahar highway.

Local residents and officials told media representatives last week that the militants had kidnapped 10 passengers in Qarabagh on their way to Jaghori from Kabul.

But Brig. Gen. Zarawar Zahid told Pajhwok Afghan News the insurgents had not abducted anyone in Ghazni. He called the reports rebel propaganda to fan differences among the people.

Security personnel at check-points regularly searched suspects on the Kabul-Kandahar road and kidnap incidents were unlikely to occur on the highway.

“We have set up police check-posts in restive areas, where people could travel without any fear,” he said, blaming some elements for striking fears into people’s hearts.

Earlier, Deputy Governor Mohammad Ali Ahmadi had confirmed the kidnapped of 10 passengers. But nine of them were freed later.
