KABUL (Pajhwok): Given below are biographies of the new cabinet picks that President Ashraf Ghani nominated before embarking his five-day visit to Washington:
Abdul Bari Jahani, information and culture minister-designate, is a son of Haji Abdul Ahmad Khan, Jahani. He was born in 1948 in Kandahar City. He completed early education and two years later to the United States where he worked for the Voice of America (VOA).
He has authored more than 10 books in Pashto’s current national anthem.
Ali Ahmad Osmani, energy and water minister-designate, has a master’s degree in architecture. He was a lecturer at Herat University and had worked as coordinator with the European Union and WFP programmes in western Afghanistan. He was also mayor of Herat.
Mohammad Gulab Mangal, borders and tribal affairs minister-designate, is a son of Yaruddin. He was born in 1957 in southeastern Paktia province. Holding a degree in Pashto literature, Mangal had served as the governor of Paktia, Laghman and Helmand provinces in the previous administration.
Sayed Sadaat Naderi, urban development minister-designate is a son of Sayed Mansour Naderi and was born in 1976 in Kabul City. He has a degree in economics and international trade from North London University. He was a member of the central bank’s board of directors and president of a private insurance company in Kabul.
Engineer Mahmood Baligh, public works minister-designate was born in 1971 in central Daikundi province. He has a master’s degree in architecture. He has taught at the Polytechnic University and was editor-in-chief of Iqtedar-e-Milli newspaper.
Abdul Razaq Wahidi, information and technology minister-designate has a master’s in mathematics. He has worked as a university lecturer and deputy finance minister.
Assadullah Zameer, agriculture minister-designate is a son of Haji Mohammad Dil, was born in Kabul city. Zameer has expertise in fields of economics, agricultural development, rural development, natural resources development and strategic planning. He has 14 years of experience with various sectors of natural resources, rural development and education. He has a master’s degree in economics from the US.
Humayun Rasa, commerce and industry minister-designate, has a master’s degree in computer science. Earlier, he was deputy education minister and deputy director of the National Directorate of Security (NDS).
Dilbar Nazari, women’s affairs minister-designate, is an ex-lawmaker who has degrees in international affairs and literature.
Mohammad Batash, transport minister-designate, is son of Haji Bori. He was born in 1961 in the Imam Sahib district of Kunduz province. He has a doctorate in international affairs from a Moscow university. He has also worked as advisor for Afghan government and international organisations.Previously he held several governmental positions, including transport’s deputy minister. Over the past three years, he has been working as governor of Faryab province.
Salamat Azimi, counternarcotics minister-designate, is a daughter of Mohammad Azim and was born in Faryab province. She holds a degree in law and political science and has worked as deputy head of Balkh University.
Abdul Sattar Murad, economy minister-designate, is a former governor of Kapisa province. He has a degree in international relations from the US. He has worked as a diplomat in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Dr. Nasrin Oryakhel, labour and social affairs minister-designate, has graduated from Kabul University. She has served a lecturer at Kabul Medical University besides serving as head of Rabia Balkhi and Malali hospitals in Kabul.
Dr. Abdul Basir Anwar, justice minister-designate, was born in 1952 in the Jabalus Saraj district of central Parwan province. A graduate from Kabul Medical University, he possesses master’s degrees in political science and Islamic Studies. A former advisor to ex-president Hamid Karzai, he has served in various governmental positions.
Asadullah Hanif Balkhi, education minister-designate, was born in 1957 in Balkh province. He has a doctorate in Law and Sharia from Saudi Arabia. He was ambassador to Kuwait and held several other governmental positions. Balkhi has translated more than 16 books from Arabic to Dari.
Farida Mohmand is higher education minister-designate; Farida momand has been dean of paediatric medicine faculty in Kabul medical university, and trainer of training program in Maiwand teaching hospital Kabul, since 1995.she have been appointed as dean of quality assurance directorate in ministry of higher education but later on she resigned. she is also a member of paediatric department Kabul Medical University.
She was born in 1965 and educated at Rabia-e-Balkhi High school, from 1982-1987 she lectured in curative medicine faculty of Kabul medical university. she then pursued DCH (diploma of child health) in Maiwand Teaching Hospital and worked as an academic cadre for Kabul Medical university.
Lt. Gen. Mohammad Afzal Ludin defence minister-designate; Ludin hails from central Logar province. He has studied and obtained military education in both the US and former Soviet Union.
During Babrak Karmal’s era, Ludin was deputy defence minister while in Dr. Najibullah’s administration he has worked on many positions including Nangarhar’s governor and National Security Council (NSC) advisor. Mohammad Afzal Ludin is 71-year-old.
Minister-designate for the ministry of defense (MoD), Maj. Gen. Abdullah Habibi, is the son of Ghulam Habib. He is born in 1952 in Sawki district of Kunduz province.
He studied at a military school in 1963 and completed his profession in artillery with the degree with “Excellent” performance. Habibi pursued his higher education in military studies in Russia and achieved master degree. He was ranked as professor by the Commission of Military Evaluation.
He was graduated from a military university and ranked as second lieutenant in 1972. Habibi then promoted to Major General by the former president Mohammad Najibullah in 1990.
He served as lecturer at military university, commander for a military unit, head of border forces’ operation, border forces general commander, deputy head of education and training department of ministry of defense, head of audit department, military assistant of ministry of defense and commander of the 201st Silab Military Corps.
Habibi also received several appreciation letters and awards as a result of his excellent performance.
