Protestors seek impartial probe into Farkhanda’s lynching

FAIZABAD (Pajhwok): Hundreds of people, most of them women, on Thursday took to the streets in Faizabad, the capital of northeastern Badakhshan province, calling for an open trial in Farkhanda’s lynching case.

Farkhanda, 27, was murdered by a mob last Thursday after she criticised a cleric at a mosque and Religious Affairs.

The protestors in Faizabad chanted “death to Farkhanda’s killers, “we want justice, “she woke up dead conscience” and “she is the honour of Afghanistan.”

Arifa Naveed, Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission (AIHRC)’s Badakhshan office head, condemned the killing of Farkhanda as an “inhuman act”. She asked the government to conduct an impartial inquiry into her murder and bring the perpetrators to justice.

Another protestor, Syed Omar Baher, a civil society activist, said their protest was aimed at pushing the government to punish her murderers and police officers who failed to protect her.

Abdul Wali Qazizada, head of the court of appeals, said Farkhanda had been killed by a mob, whose action was against Islam.
