Boehner warns against arbitrary deadlines in Afghanistan
WASHINGTON (Pajhwok): US House of Representatives Speaker John Boehner on Thursday warned against any arbitrary deadline for withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan.
A day after, President Ashraf Ghani addressed a joint meeting of the Congress, Boehner warned against any deadlines that would compromise the gains or undermine success in completing the mission.
“It was an honor to have President Ghani from Afghanistan here in the Congress this week. His message of peace and his tributes to the service and sacrifice of our brave Americans was powerful,” he said.
“I was particularly struck about his statement that three million Afghan girls are now in school – compared with none before September 11, 2001. This is something to be proud of, and reminds us that arbitrary political deadlines should never be put ahead of ensuring this success that we’ve worked so hard to achieve,” he said.
He said they would review closely the specifics of President Obama’s troop level announcement for the remainder of 2015. "But make no mistake: more tough decisions will be here soon,” Boehner predicted.
