MAIMANA/ZARANJ (Pajhwok): A number of women activists in Faryab and Nimroz provinces on Saturday staged protests against the lynching of a woman, asking the government to execute her killers.

Farkhanda, 27, was murdered by a mob on March 19 after she criticised a cleric in Kabul.

About 200 protestors in Maimana, the capital of Faryab, condemned the killing of Farkhanda. They chanted: “Put an end to ignorance; eradicate the culture of amulets and sorcery.”

Religious scholar Maulvi Gul Ahmad said the killers Farkhanda, who had violated the teachings of Islam, should be awarded deterrent punishment to set an example for others.

Rabia Danishjo, a women’s NGO head, demanded: “The murderers should be executed at the same site where the innocent woman was lynched.” She also asked judicial organs to dispose of cases of violence against women.

In a resolution, the protestors said all those involved in the outrage should be openly tried. They urged parliament to approve the Elimination of Violence Against Women (EVAW) law.

Meanwhile, a number of women in Zaranj, the capital of Nimroz, demanded execution of Farkhanda’s killers. Civil society activist Shah Gul Gulzada said they execrated the incident that had no justification.
