CHARIKAR (Pajhwok): Female prisoners in Charikar jail of central Parwan province have called off their hunger strike, an official said Sunday.
Last Thursday, as many as 20 women went on hunger strike, with three of them stitched their lips to protest their detention following a presidential decree. Officials said some of the prisoners had involved in serious nature of crimes that could not benefit from the presidential decree.
Charikar jail director Lt. Col. Abdul Wahid told Pajhwok Afghan News that the governor and some other officials held a meeting with the protesters and convinced them to end their strike.
The protesting prisoners were assured their reservations would be shared with the authorities. Around 600 prisoners including 20 women were being kept in detention facility in Charikar.
A reporter of Pajhwok Afghan News tried to get their version of protesting women but jail authority did not allow the correspondent to access the inmates.
