Kochis warn to launch protest against land grabbing
JALALABAD (Pajhwok): A number of Kochis (nomads) in eastern Nangarhar province on Sunday held mammoth rally expressing fear that their land in the Behsud district allocated for pasture of their cattle was being grabbed.
Former Wolesi Jirga member Qadir Khan Kochi headed the protesters and he demanded President Ashraf Ghani to protect their rights and resolve the issue on priority basis.
Qadir Khan told Pajhwok Afghan News: “This locality is being used by Kochis as their pasture land for years. Now, there are plans to construct a township for university’s teachers. Some people have already started grabbing the land,” he informed.
He said Kochis tribe had ownership documents of the land and the tribe was grazing their animals there for years.
He made it clear no one would be allowed to grab “our land. If the government wants to develop a township for university staff then Kochis should be given alternate for their land,” he added.
