For food safety, Food and Drug Authority (FDA) being setup
New data from the World Health Organization (WHO) on the harm caused by food-borne illnesses underscore the global threats posed by unsafe foods. Unsafe food is known to be involved in more than 200 different diseases.
Speaking at an event marking the day, Public Health Minister Dr. Ferozuddin Feroz said it was his ministry’s responsibility to protect consumers from the harm of food items.
“There is a constant increase in health problems associated with unsafe food. We seek support from our national and international partners to strengthen collaboration on improving food safety,” Feroz added.
New food law for Afghanistan is currently being processed by the Ministry of Justice to strengthen food safety and hygiene guidelines and regulations.
The WHO also announced to support the Afghanistan Ministry of Public Health in establishing a Food and Drug Authority (FDA) in the country within the next six years.
Dr Rik Peeperkorn, WHO country representative in Afghanistan, said reforming food safety systems and enforcing food laws should be high on the public health agenda.
“To guarantee food safety, we need to foster multi-sectors collaboration among public health, animal health, agriculture, commerce and others for better communication and joint action,” he added.
