2 soldiers dead in firefight between Afghan, foreign forces
JALALABAD (Pajhwok): One Resolute Support service member and an Afghan National Army (ANA) soldier died on Wednesday in a brief exchange of gunfire in the governor’s house in Jalalabad, the capital city of eastern Nangarhar province, an official said.
A statement from the Resolute Support mission said: “An incident in Jalalabad today resulted in the death of one Resolute Support service member.”
However, it is the Resolute Support policy to defer casualty notification to the relevant national authorities. “The incident is under investigation and further information will be made available as appropriate,” the brief statement said.
But police Chief Brig. Gen. Ahmad Sherzad told Pajhwok Afghan News an ANA soldier was killed by foreign troops when the former opened fire on foreign soldiers.
The incident took place when foreign troops were leaving the Governor’s House, he said. No one suffered injuries in the incident, he added.
Sherzad added a senior US Embassy official had a meeting with Nangarhar’s local officials today noon.
The ANA soldier who opened fire on foreign soldiers accompanied the embassy official to the Governor’s House, he said.
An official wishing to go unnamed said that another ANA soldier was wounded in the firefight. The motive behind the incident is still unclear.
But 201 Selab Military Corps in east zone said in a statement one foreign soldier died and seven more were wounded in the attack. Two Afghan soldiers were also killed and another injured, added the statement.
Zubair Sediqi, who claims to be a spokesperson of Hezb-i-Islami, said the attacker was a member of his party.
He added the attacker was named Azim and was their insider in the Afghan army ranks.
