Gen. Ludin bows out as defence minister nominee
KABUL (Pajhwok): Lt. Gen. Mohammad Afzal Ludin, minister-designate for the Ministry of Defense (MoD), has withdrawn his nomination, Presidential Palace said Wednesday.
Last Monday, President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani nominated Gen. Ludin as defense minister.
However, the statement received by Pajhwok Afghan News said Gen. Ludin in a statement decided to pull out today (Wednesday).
The president viewed Gen. Ludin as an expert in military affairs and admired his decision, it said.
The statement released by Gen. Ludin’s office said: “It is a moment of pride for me that Afghans have reposed trust on me after serving 34 years in the country’s armed forces.”
He said he recently came to know that his nomination for the position might possibly create divisions among people. “I never want to be the reason of division among my people, therefore I want to withdraw my nomination,” he added.
During Babrak Karmal’s era, Ludin was deputy defense minister while in Dr. Najibullah’s administration he has worked on many positions including Nangarhar’s governor and National Security Council (NSC) advisor.
