Gunmen kill 20 labourers in Balochistan

Apr 11, 2015 - 13:53

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): Unidentified gunmen riding motorbikes shot dead 20 labourers and injured three others in Turbat's Gogdan locality of Balochistan province on Saturday, a senior police official said.

The Pakistani media quoted Imran Qureshi, Turbat’s District Police Officer (DPO), said that militants opened indiscriminate fire at the sleeping labourers.

The injured were rushed to District Headquarters Hospital for treatment while the assailants fled the scene after committing the crime. However, no group so far claimed credit for the attack.

He said the incident appeared to be an act of targeted killing. He said the labourers belonged to Sindh province and were employed for construction of a bridge in the area.

Balochistan Chief Minister Dr. Abdul Malik Baloch arrived in the district to chair a high-level meeting soon after the incident. The government has announced that Rs. 1 million will be given to each labourer's family as compensation.

Turbat is considered to be one of the sensitive districts in Balochistan. It is also the home town of the Chief Minister. Instances of labourer killings have repeatedly taken place in Balochistan over the years.
