Police, militants clash in Aibak leaves 2 dead
AIBAK (Pajhwok): A policeman and a Taliban commander were killed, four others wounded and a number of fighters arrested during a five-hour clash between militants and security forces in Aibak City, the capital of northern Samangan province, an official said Wednesday.
Officials last night said that a number of insurgents led by Mullah Bashir were gathered in a house in Aibak City to carry out coordinated attacks on government departments.
But on a tip-off, security forces launched an operation against rebels, which led to intense firefight between the two sides.
Mohammad Sadiq Azizi, the governor’s spokesman, told Pajhwok Afghan News the clash started around 5:00pm and continued till 10: 00 pm last night.
He said Taliban commander Mullah Bashir and a special force’ personnel were killed and the commander’s mother and three policemen wounded in the clash. Four militants were arrested after the clash.
Other rebels have managed to escape, Azizi said.
Moqbil Azizi, a doctor at the Aibak Civil Hospital, confirmed receiving Taliban commander Mullah Bashir and a policeman’s bodies.
He said four wounded including Mullah Bashir’s mother and three policemen were also shifted to the hospital.
But militants claimed killing five policemen in the gun battle in Zindan Dara area last evening. One rebel was killed and a woman wounded in the firefight, the group said.
